Ridgemount Quarries operates a limestone quarry operation located in Fort Erie, Ontario. Prior to licensing an aggregate operation detailed geologic and hydrogeologic assessments are done of the site. The purpose of the studies is two-fold:

1. To assess the value and quality of the aggregate to be extracted;

2. To determine environmental measures required to minimize the impacts of the aggregate operation on the environment Ridgemount Quarries is committed to the protection of the environment;

The information from the initial assessment reports is used to develop environmental monitoring and prevention programs.

Ridgemount Quarries are situated above and nearby the Onondaga Escarpment. This escarpment is a low relief ridge that generally parallels the Lake Erie Shoreline. In this area there are four geological rock formations: the Onondaga, the Bois Blanc, the Bertie and the Salina. Ridgemount Quarries mines into the Bertie formation to obtain limestone of a quality that it may be used for construction products.

Ridgemount Quarries has a vibration monitoring program to monitor vibrations caused from blasting. The monitoring information is gathered and compared to Ministry of the Environment guidelines. The monitoring information assists Ridgemount in designing our blast program to minimize environmental impacts.

Ridgemount Quarries discharges clean, cold groundwater to the north tributary of Frenchman's Creek. The pumps have been designed to mimic flood and drought conditions.

Ridgemount Quarries also conducts a monthly environmental monitoring program to document creek conditions and the presence of fish. This monitoring is important to the health of Frenchman's Creek.

Information gathered is compiled into an annual report that is submitted to the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Ridgemount Quarries has also upgraded the creek to improve water flow, reduce suspended solids and prevent flooding during high flow conditions.

Under the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Air Monitoring and Reporting Regulation Ontario industries are required to annually calculate and report air emissions from their facilities. This program requires our sites to calculate emissions of particulate matter (dust) and other parameters using an emissions modeling software program. Ridgemount Quarries have made these reports available through this web page.
