Vineland Quarries operates a limestone quarry located south of the Niagara Escarpment in Vineland Ontario. The site covers the area west and east of Cherry Avenue and south of Fly Road.

Prior to licensing an aggregate operation, detailed geologic and hydrogeologic assessments are done of the site. The purpose of the studies is two-fold:

1. To assess the value and quality of the aggregate to be extracted;

2. To determine environmental measures required to minimize impacts of the aggregate operation on the environment;

The information from the initial assessment reports is used to develop environmental monitoring and prevention programs. Vineland Quarries is committed to the protection of the environment.

The geologic setting of the property consists of overburden, dolostone and shale. The overburden is the soil that sits on top of the rock and is removed prior to mining an area. The dolostone is the limestone, which is mined out to produce products. The rock is mined out to the point that the Rochester Shale begins. The Rochester shale does not have the characteristics required for construction products.

Vineland Quarries conducts an extensive water monitoring program on and off site. The program encompasses monitoring of onsite and off-site monitoring wells, offsite residential wells, and onsite surface water.

This program is managed by Vineland Quarries in conjunction with the professional consulting firms of Jagger Hims and FCE Services. Reports are submitted annually to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of the Environment.

Vineland Quarries has a vibration monitoring program to monitor vibrations caused from blasting. The monitoring information is gathered and compared to Ministry of the Environment guidelines. The monitoring information assists Vineland in designing our blast program to minimize environmental impact.

Vineland Quarries carries out monthly dust-fall air sampling. This dust-fall monitoring helps monitor the effectiveness of the site's dust control program.

Under the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Air Monitoring and Reporting Regulation Ontario Residents are required to annually calculate and report air emissions from their facilities. This program requires our sites to calculate emissions of particulate matter (dust) and other parameters using an emissions modeling software program. Vineland Quarries have made these reports available through this web page.
