Walker Brothers Asphalt plant, in conjunction with Walker Brothers Quarries, carries out dust monitoring around the facility. Two different sampling techniques are used for this program. Dust fall jars are used to provide a passive measurement of dust fallout over a 30-day period at the sample locations around the quarry. High Volume Air Sampling devices (hi-vols) are used as an active measurement to collect dust over a 24 hour period. They vacuum dust (also referred to as suspended particulate matter) of approximately 44 micros or less in diameter from the air. These methods allow Walker Brothers Asphalt to assess the effectiveness of onsite dust control systems and set goals for continuous improvement.

In addition to this monitoring Walker Brothers submits an annual report to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment under Ontario Regulation 127/01. This program requires Walker Brothers Asphalt plant to calculate their yearly emissions of suspended particulate matter and other parameters using an emissions modeling software program.
