Walker Brothers Quarries operates an aggregate mining operation in Niagara Falls, Ontario (the quarry is located at Walker Industries Holdings Limited Main Office Site in Niagara Falls). The site extracts aggregate, both the Lockport and Decew Dolostone formation. Dolostone refers to the carbonate rock made up primarily of the mineral dolomite. Dolostone is commonly referred to as "limestone".
Walker Brothers Quarries has an extensive network of ground and surface water monitors both on and off site. The program is comprehensive and assesses water quality and quantity of onsite wells, surrounding residential wells, groundwater springs, nearby ponds, 10-mile creek, and a vast network of groundwater monitors. This program is managed by Walker Brother Quarries in conjunction with the professional consulting firms of Gartner Lee and FCE Services. Annual monitoring reports are submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of the Environment, the Region of Niagara and the City of Niagara Falls.

Walker Brothers Quarries conducts a Noise and Vibration monitoring program to assess levels and possible effects.

Noise monitoring is conducted twice annually at various locations around the site.

Ongoing blast monitoring is conducted at the site. Blast monitoring results are compared to Ministry of Environment guidelines. Monthly monitoring reports are resubmitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Environment.

In addition to the above programs Walker Brothers Quarries carries out dust monitoring around the facility. Two different sampling techniques are used for this program. Dust fall jars are used to provide a passive measurement of dust fallout over a 30-day period at the sample locations around the quarry. High Volume Air Sampling devices (hi-vols) are used as an active measurement to collect dust over a 24 hour period. They vacuum dust (also referred to as suspended particulate matter) of approximately 44 micros or less in diameter from the air. These methods allow Walker Brothers Quarries to assess the effectiveness of onsite dust control systems and set goals for continuous improvement.

In addition to this monitoring Walker Brothers Quarries submits an annual report to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment under Ontario Regulation 127/01. This program requires Walker Brothers Quarries to calculate their yearly emissions of suspended particulate matter and other parameters using an emissions modeling software program.
