A Visit to the Atlas Landfill

atlas-landfill-visitOn Wednesday December 14, 2016, Walker Environmental’s Tim McVicar, Vice-President of Transfer and Disposal, provided city councillors and staff a tour of the Atlas Landfill Remediation Project in Welland, ON by means of a city bus. The mini road trip provided an opportunity to view the progression of the remediated landfill project and to continue conversations on what the site might become, when it is completed.

When the landfill reaches its approved capacity and final contours in the next few years, the primary plan at this point is to repurpose the acreage into recreational space for Welland residents. Ideas are being welcomed by the City of Welland. In addition, Walker Environmental has offered to potentially assist the City with their plan through the utilization of equipment already available on site to structure the areas in a way that will work towards the final goal.

The project was also a recipient of one of ten awards handed out at the 17th Annual Brownie Awards in November 2016. The Brownies, awarded by the Canadian Brownfield Network are given out to the top builders, innovators and visionaries that have revitalized communities across Canada with their brownfield rehabilitation projects.
