Award Winner – Agriculture Research Project

Award Winner - Agriculture Research ProjectOn Tuesday, November 9, 2010, the City of Niagara Falls had a volunteer recognition evening at Club Italia.  At that event Niagara Waste System Limited received an Environment Award for the East Landfill Agricultural Study.

In response to the Region of Niagara’s concern over the loss of agricultural lands, Niagara Waste Systems Limited partnered with the University of Guelph to study the possibility of reclaiming the East Landfill for agriculture. The research, which began in 2006, continues with the goal of determining the most economically viable option for farming. In 2010, we are planting 17 hectares of the East Landfill with miscanthus and forage crop for use as biofuel or as a much needed carbon source for our compost facility

Tim McVicar, General Manager of Operations, received the award on behalf of the company. The project would not have been successful without the great work of our operators, Walter and Sons Construction and our great organic products from IMS compost and NBLP.
