Celebrating Success in Halifax

In 2010, the product produced from the Halifax N-Viro® facility, commonly known as N-Rich®, was mixed with immature compost by a contractor and applied on the median of a very busy street in Halifax. Odour complaints ensued and N-Viro® and its N-Rich® fertilizer came under scrutiny. This occurred at a very sensitive time, when N-Rich® was fairly new in the marketplace and neighbours still weren’t sure about having a biosolids facility in the area. As a result, the market for N-Rich® drastically decreased.

Since the acquisition by Walker in 2014, and with considerable effort by the Halifax team, N-Viro’s® image and its N-Rich® fertilizer product has quietly been restored. The production plant was returned to showcase condition and LP Consulting, hired to assist with product sales and marketing, did a great job convincing clients to give the product another chance. Halifax Water’s faith was renewed that N-Viro® could provide the service they promised and as a result they also invested in assisting to make the product better and the plant operate more efficiently. Recent inspections by Nova Scotia Environment and the Department of Labour have shown that the plant is in full compliance with an engaged group of employees that go above and beyond.

These were reasons to celebrate, so this summer, N-Viro® Halifax held a stakeholder appreciation BBQ and had over 60 people in attendance including Truro Agromart staff (fertilizer distributor), Halifax Water (municipal client), farmers and their children, a municipal councilor, LP Consulting and plant staff.

Some of the farmers in attendance approached Halifax Water expressing sentiments such as “We need more fertilizer, there isn’t enough to go around”, “I can’t afford to grow soybeans without your product” and “Using this product increased our profitability enabling us to bring another person home to work the farm.”

Today, N-Viro® Halifax has pre-sold all of its N-Rich® product for the next 3 years. They have a loyal client base that keeps the warehouse empty. There hasn’t been any negative publicity in several years. It is safe to say, this is what success looks like. Congratulations to everyone at Walker and N-Viro® that contributed to this incredible transformation!
