Walker Aggregates continues to be recognized as a leader in its industry, bringing home an Award of Excellence for both Walker Brothers Quarries in Niagara Falls and McGregor Quarry in the Town of Amherstburg. The coveted awards were presented by the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA) along with several other prestigious industry achievement awards. Frank Kielbowich, General Manager of Aggregates Niagara Region and West GTA, and Ryan Wall, Vice President of Aggregates Simcoe and Essex, were on hand at the OSSGA’s 2018 Annual Conference in February to accept the honours.

The Award of Excellence recognizes OSSGA members’ past and ongoing commitment to industry improvement. A site is eligible for this award after it has won at least one award each for Community Relations, Progressive Rehabilitation and Property Enhancement.

“Being recognized with the Award of Excellence is a testament to our employees’ commitment to quality work both on our sites and in their communities,” says Walker Aggregates’ Executive Vice President Ken Lucyshyn, adding that the recognition for Walker Brothers Quarries and McGregor Quarry is particularly noteworthy. “With Walker Brothers being our longest running operation and sharing the location with Walker Industries’ other divisions, it takes many levels of cooperation in order to maintain a positive relationship with our neighbours while running a clean and safe operation. We have worked tirelessly at this location to achieve the standards of this award for many years and we are thrilled to say our employees have earned it.”

For McGregor Quarry, the journey to the Award of Excellence was not as long, but certainly did not come easy. Since being acquired by Walker Aggregates in 2012, the quarry has genuinely embraced Walker values, working hard to secure Community Relations awards for the past three consecutive years, as well as awards for Progressive Rehabilitation and Property Enhancement in 2016, quickly qualifying them for the Award of Excellence. “The honours they have earned in such a short timeframe are no small feat,” says Ken Lucyshyn. “To say I’m impressed by our McGregor employees would be an understatement.”

In addition, the two quarries each received another Community Relations Award from the OSSGA to add to their accolades, an honour that was also extended to Walker’s Ridgemount Quarries in Fort Erie, Vineland Quarries & Crushed Stone in Lincoln, and Duntroon Quarry in the Township of Clearview. The Community Relations Award recognizes good neighbourly activities, community involvement, strong media relations, and dedication to education and awareness of the aggregate industry.

The OSSGA is a non-profit industry association representing more than 280 sand, gravel and crushed stone producers and suppliers of valuable industry products and services. Collectively, the members produce a large majority of the approximately 164 million tonnes of aggregate consumed annually on average in the province to build and maintain Ontario’s infrastructure. The OSSGA works in partnership with government and the public to promote a safe and competitive aggregate industry, contributing to the creation of strong communities in the province.
