Soil Depot Information
The IMS Compost Facility produces high quality soil blends, compost and mulches used by the landscaping and agricultural industries.
High Quality Compost
IMS sells its high quality compost to a variety of soil depots, landscapers, vineyards and homeowners. Compost is a soil amendment rich in organic matter, resulting from the decomposition of materials such as leaves, grass, kitchen scraps and food waste. At the IMS windrow composting facility in Thorold, we subject this material to a time and temperature process that kills pathogens and eliminates weed seeds.
Compost is beneficial to the soil for many purposes including moisture retention, and improved porosity. Compost prevents the drying and shrinking of soil, increases its permeability, helps maintain a uniform pH, and mineralizes the soil.
Mulches
IMS also produces commercial mulches, made from ground and partially decomposed branches, twigs and landscape scraps. Organic mulches conserve moisture and feed plants, earth worms, microbes and other beneficial soil life. Mulch insulates and protects soil from drying and the hard baking effects caused by evaporation of water from soil exposed to the sun. The mulch covering excludes light which prevents germination of many weed seeds. Fewer weeds provide less competition for available moisture and nutrients. Mulches also add attractive features to the landscape.
The Land Cover Soil Depot is open seasonally to the public.
