Walker Industries Commits $50,000 to Affordable Homeownership in Orillia

Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North – Press Release

ORILLIA, ON – Habitat for Humanity has another reason to be thankful after receiving a $50,000 donation from the Walker family and Walker Industries in support of the ongoing build at 499 Bay Street in Orillia.

The remarkable gift will help two local families experience the strength, stability and self-reliance which comes with the affordable purchase of their very first home. The City of Orillia will gain new neighbours, new community members and new ratepayers thanks to the volunteer effort and support of great partners like Walker Industries.

“Walker Industries, its divisions, and employees, have always been wonderful community partners in Ontario and especially with Habitat for Humanity,” said Britta Gerwin, Habitat OGN’s Director of Development and Communications. “They’ve donated their money today with this generous gift, but they’ve also donated their time, effort and sweat in the past. We’re grateful for their continued commitment within the affordable housing movement.”

Habitat homes are built with contributions of building materials, goods and volunteer labour from businesses, along with financial donations from individuals, groups and corporations. The Habitat for Humanity model ensures that low-income families own their homes and no longer rely on social housing subsidies. By owning their homes, Habitat for Humanity families contribute annually to the economic base through property taxes – transforming a substantial tax burden into a positive community impact.

“The Walker family, the company and its employees are committed to making a difference in the communities where we do business,” says Sheila (Walker) Bonapace, one of the Walker Industries’ shareholders. “We continually look to find ways to improve the social and environmental conditions in these communities, and are so pleased to support Habitat for Humanity in helping families in need purchase their own homes.”

Local families wishing to experience the strength, stability and self-reliance of homeownership through Habitat for Humanity in Orillia should visit www.habitatgatewaynorth.com for more information and to apply. The family selection process will begin mid-June.
